What auto insurance is required in Texas?

Texas requires every driver to carry minimum liability coverage of 30/60/25. That means $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 for total injuries per accident, and $25,000 for property damage, set under the Texas Transportation Code and explained by the Texas Department of Insurance. Liability coverage pays for harm you cause to other people and their property. It does not pay for your own vehicle or your own injuries. Driving without it carries fines that start around $175 and can lead to a suspended license.

02

Is the Texas minimum enough?

For many drivers, no. The 30/60/25 minimum only covers other people’s costs, and only up to those limits. A serious accident, or one involving a newer vehicle, can run past $25,000 in property damage and well past $30,000 in medical bills quickly, and you are personally responsible for anything above your limits. The Texas Department of Insurance itself recommends considering more than the minimum. We help you weigh higher liability limits, decide whether to add collision and comprehensive coverage for your own vehicle, and look at uninsured motorist coverage, which matters in a state with a meaningful share of uninsured drivers.

03

Does auto insurance cover hail damage?

Hail damage to your vehicle is covered by comprehensive coverage, not by liability and not by collision. North Texas sees hail often enough that this is worth a real conversation, especially if you park outside. If your policy is liability-only, hail damage to your car is not covered. We will tell you plainly whether comprehensive coverage makes sense for your situation and what it adds to your premium.
